Time has passed and life has meandered and flowed and waterfalled as life does.<br />
<br />
I have had a go at a good many creative things along the way and my latest try is bottle gardening or terrarium planting or miniature gardening! I love these little ecosystems.<br />
<br />
It is a great pass time and very therapeutic and the results are great. I have a large bottle that has been planted for about 6 months, the plants are thriving and beautiful. I also have 2 smaller bottles that are doing equally as well and some succulent mini gardens ( I may do a post on these in the future) . At last I have found a way I can keep plants alive!<br />
<br />
I thought I would do my first post in over 2 years about planting up a demijohn. So here goes:<br />
<br />
First collect your stuff- I have learned a lot along the way and am still learning as I'm just at the beginning of this particular path in my life!<br />
<br />
1.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K7pIT0LdBOo/WOFEJKTW5rI/AAAAAAAAGLU/fOeTT97fwTYmkLIya_x-cxh9uEPKaB3bQCLcB/s1600/IMG_3157.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K7pIT0LdBOo/WOFEJKTW5rI/AAAAAAAAGLU/fOeTT97fwTYmkLIya_x-cxh9uEPKaB3bQCLcB/s400/IMG_3157.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So: Small sized gravel rinsed; old funnel with the spout cut off; demijohn or any other bottle or jar; sphagnum moss; reindeer moss ; houseplant compost; activated charcoal (I use the stuff that is used in fish pond filters); old wire coat hanger; a grabber- the sort of things that are useful for picking up screws and nuts and bolts; plants ; a champagne or cremant cork; time; patience.<br />
<br />
<br />
2. Clean your bottle inside and out as well as you can. Then using your funnel if you wish, to add the gravel until you have about 3 to 4 cm depth.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fDwcVApgbyQ/WOFFh_-I4sI/AAAAAAAAGLg/3hMB9qgRlwAidAsauPMVwTbrSM6O-IVSgCLcB/s1600/IMG_3161.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fDwcVApgbyQ/WOFFh_-I4sI/AAAAAAAAGLg/3hMB9qgRlwAidAsauPMVwTbrSM6O-IVSgCLcB/s320/IMG_3161.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This is how deep one of mine was.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4hpxR9xMeGI/WOFGAFb3bSI/AAAAAAAAGLk/uknQFSMzVT09Ih5bjvjjAmadYPvwpCFAQCLcB/s1600/IMG_3163.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4hpxR9xMeGI/WOFGAFb3bSI/AAAAAAAAGLk/uknQFSMzVT09Ih5bjvjjAmadYPvwpCFAQCLcB/s320/IMG_3163.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
3. Put in your activated charcoal, just a thin layer will be fine. This helps to keep the environment of your mini ecosystem sweet and good.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6Ky-3zGlEX4/WOFGu9WQ37I/AAAAAAAAGLs/87ndIMAShakkFFcNmP-mng7gLIxfobn7wCLcB/s1600/IMG_3164.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6Ky-3zGlEX4/WOFGu9WQ37I/AAAAAAAAGLs/87ndIMAShakkFFcNmP-mng7gLIxfobn7wCLcB/s320/IMG_3164.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
4. Next a layer of sphagnum moss, this helps to filter the water and keep moisture in.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9XLIyTF1A_A/WOFHFc-ycoI/AAAAAAAAGLw/kVuVn9qYyyAyqXKppJtprNmrXv5OKDoEwCLcB/s1600/IMG_3165.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9XLIyTF1A_A/WOFHFc-ycoI/AAAAAAAAGLw/kVuVn9qYyyAyqXKppJtprNmrXv5OKDoEwCLcB/s320/IMG_3165.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
You just need to push this in as best you can, it does get a bit messy. Firm down when you have enough in.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pSTYx9YHISE/WOFHoeGmG4I/AAAAAAAAGL4/iOYUpoQ3EmskniRglkvlew9nYPUu0fjSQCLcB/s1600/IMG_3169.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pSTYx9YHISE/WOFHoeGmG4I/AAAAAAAAGL4/iOYUpoQ3EmskniRglkvlew9nYPUu0fjSQCLcB/s320/IMG_3169.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
5. The compost is next, although I try to use a funnel the only good way to get this into this size neck of bottle is to just push it in with my fingers.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5_W7r2RUbW4/WOFH9wF66cI/AAAAAAAAGMA/rLAMy8rfp6wfz6iA35dRhfbUy3w0DxxDQCLcB/s1600/IMG_3170.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5_W7r2RUbW4/WOFH9wF66cI/AAAAAAAAGMA/rLAMy8rfp6wfz6iA35dRhfbUy3w0DxxDQCLcB/s320/IMG_3170.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--Enw6TZ_gdc/WOFH98zkujI/AAAAAAAAGL8/OnN0jqH8zXg6mNDZqhYOh1ulGGtcHR_4gCLcB/s1600/IMG_3168.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--Enw6TZ_gdc/WOFH98zkujI/AAAAAAAAGL8/OnN0jqH8zXg6mNDZqhYOh1ulGGtcHR_4gCLcB/s320/IMG_3168.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AjDqgmWyesw/WOFIbtfIK6I/AAAAAAAAGME/LR3onZGJSHIwGSV5Q3Q5ZHYGAEFvfy1-QCLcB/s1600/IMG_3172.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AjDqgmWyesw/WOFIbtfIK6I/AAAAAAAAGME/LR3onZGJSHIwGSV5Q3Q5ZHYGAEFvfy1-QCLcB/s320/IMG_3172.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div>
6. Firm down the compost after adding a little water to dampen the garden. I use the coat hanger tool I have made.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
7. Next begin to add your plants.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1m97aOTD4aI/WOFIc593t0I/AAAAAAAAGMI/C2MBiAZVoqkI3IqQGgQYmmEvW43U1B-swCEw/s1600/IMG_3173.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1m97aOTD4aI/WOFIc593t0I/AAAAAAAAGMI/C2MBiAZVoqkI3IqQGgQYmmEvW43U1B-swCEw/s320/IMG_3173.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is where the grabber tool comes into its own! It helps lower the plant into the garden, move it around and hold it still while you plant it. This is not an easy 2 minute job but that's the challenge and pleasure of this little pass time! I got my grabber from good old Amazon.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The coat hanger tool is made from .. yep a coat hanger that I bend and straighten as I need. I also wrap some kitchen towel around the bent end to help make a bottle cleaner when it isn't being a poker and planter. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b7mL4skhfpw/WOFJUI8i1xI/AAAAAAAAGM4/44L50AoActATqJnnJ81mzVTLE7oTteOwACEw/s1600/IMG_3171.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b7mL4skhfpw/WOFJUI8i1xI/AAAAAAAAGM4/44L50AoActATqJnnJ81mzVTLE7oTteOwACEw/s320/IMG_3171.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Coat hanger<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pl1e2qN30YA/WOFJYGx3TKI/AAAAAAAAGM4/YY9a2UevOpwL51D-L2An8zxJdVZoL_VzQCEw/s1600/IMG_3160.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pl1e2qN30YA/WOFJYGx3TKI/AAAAAAAAGM4/YY9a2UevOpwL51D-L2An8zxJdVZoL_VzQCEw/s320/IMG_3160.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div>
Grabber</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The plants I have started with are:</div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Ficus Piluma- a small leaved plant that creeps and climbs. You can get variegated or just green </li>
<li>Fittonia verschaffeltil- nerve plant in a variety of colours </li>
<li>Small leaf ivy</li>
<li>Small palm </li>
</ol>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
I have found it difficult to get the plants I need both locally and online but have found <a href="http://best4garden.co.uk/" target="_blank">Best4garden</a> really good. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have watched a few helpful people on YouTube and really like this one at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pHbhAPQ8_8" target="_blank">Storm the Castle </a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
8. Clean the inside of the bottle again as you may have flicked compost onto the inside of the bottle as you have been planting- using the coat hanger tool. This may take some time and several changes of paper towel but is well worth it. Then add your cork and presto! Your own mini ecosystem.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XgPnoPEYVAo/WOFIdpaD3UI/AAAAAAAAGM4/YNd-hIaVH_IEkzICkom09_EQbOl9HOxIwCEw/s1600/IMG_3174.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XgPnoPEYVAo/WOFIdpaD3UI/AAAAAAAAGM4/YNd-hIaVH_IEkzICkom09_EQbOl9HOxIwCEw/s320/IMG_3174.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bD4niciUORE/WOFJHI28cwI/AAAAAAAAGM4/HAAUGMfojq4Szip62zzxnZjUEjjXz1U2ACEw/s1600/IMG_3182.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bD4niciUORE/WOFJHI28cwI/AAAAAAAAGM4/HAAUGMfojq4Szip62zzxnZjUEjjXz1U2ACEw/s320/IMG_3182.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have also added some reindeer moss to one of the gardens as I do like it. You will need to remove the cork occasionally in the early days as the moisture levels adjust, you don't want it to get too wet and start rotting. Put in a light place but not in direct full sun as the plants can get damaged by the magnifying effect of the bottle. </div>
<div>
And that is it really, very rarely do you need to add water if the balance is right. You may need to trim the plants as they grow and perhaps turn the bottle to ensure even growth.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Hope you have enjoyed the quick step by step and please let me know if you have any comments or tips.</div>

So I was searching for a new gin to try and stumbled upon <a href="http://opihr.com/">Opihr</a> Oriental Spiced London Dry Gin. I loved the sound of the flavours and was even more taken by the variety of ways to drink this lovely gin. I was particularly taken with the cocktail called Cinnachai Flip, as this cocktail contains one of my most favourite flavours, chai. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Picture from the Opihr website </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This lovely cocktail contains:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Opihr gin</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Chai syrup</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Whole Milk</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Egg</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I purchased the gin and then went on to search for the perfect chai syrup. I soon found what I was looking for. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A gorgeous sounding recipe of blended spices, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, allspice, vanilla, star anise, nutmeg, fennel seed and mixed spice,<span style="background-color: white; color: #424242; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 27.2000007629395px;"> </span>free from artificial preservatives, colours and flavours. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This was <a href="http://www.hennyandjoes.co.uk/">Henny and Joe's</a> beautifully presented and award winning syrup that I had to have! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hmjlG8YBOn0/VWTou3J4xRI/AAAAAAAAFsk/e1C-tZzBzOQ/s1600/FullSizeRender%2B%25287%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hmjlG8YBOn0/VWTou3J4xRI/AAAAAAAAFsk/e1C-tZzBzOQ/s1600/FullSizeRender%2B%25287%2529.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On it's arrival I soon put it to the test, making one of my most favourite hot drinks, chai latte. I don't drink coffee and have become a bit of a lover of chai drinks.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Being naturally free from caffeine this also makes a lovely soothing bedtime drink as well as a lovely treat with weekend breakfast.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-diSHL5_DG1g/VWTju51kebI/AAAAAAAAFsU/T-59216F53o/s1600/IMG_0684.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-diSHL5_DG1g/VWTju51kebI/AAAAAAAAFsU/T-59216F53o/s1600/IMG_0684.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Easy to prepare, just add 2 tablespoons of the lovely syrup (which is so delectable straight off the spoon!) to a cup of milk and heat. Use a hand whisk (little electric one is good) to produce a lovely froth, pour into your favourite cup,sprinkle with cinnamon and breathe in the fragrant spice before taking a sip of this most gorgeous, warming and luxurious drink. It's like settling into your favourite armchair with a good book- decadent, exotic, warming and sooo good!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Not only can you use this lovely syrup in your gin cocktails, it is also great for milkshakes, cakes and biscuits. I plan to also try adding it to a delicious home made slow cooker rice pudding- just imagine...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
oh and of course I will need to give chai ice cream a go in the very near future- watch this space!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hmm I think it's time for a cuppa chai!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
xxooxx</div>

So to continue to share some of the lovely things that I was lucky enough to get from my daughters blogger event #thecitygirls at Sheffield last month, I thought I would share with you a lovely water infusion made with a lovely artisan water.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is a cool idea to add a splash of taste to a bottle of water. Not any water however, but the lovely artisan water called <a href="https://www.vosswater.com/index.php/water/">Voss</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img height="228" src="https://www.vosswater.com/files/8813/0496/4537/waterpage07.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="VOSS Water: Look Deeper" height="351" src="https://www.vosswater.com/files/5714/2549/9297/footer_vossworld-New-Bottle-2015.png" width="400" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Voss artisan water is from Norway and comes in a cool bottle with a wide opening which enables the addition of a variety of fruit, sweets or vegetables such as cucumber.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The taste of the water is pure and clean as it is but adding something like fruit makes a real change and gives a bottle that just looks so cool!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P9J4dXnhkAI/VU-_ca1Wy5I/AAAAAAAAFqQ/yaCJcYp_KV4/s1600/IMG_0581.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P9J4dXnhkAI/VU-_ca1Wy5I/AAAAAAAAFqQ/yaCJcYp_KV4/s400/IMG_0581.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So here's how I did my lovely flavour. I chopped up some strawberries and kiwi fruit, I then added to my bowl some raspberries, blueberries and a small amount of lemon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7QAGTWVa0Uc/VU-_8tJx3BI/AAAAAAAAFqY/GH9zpfrTMC4/s1600/IMG_0585.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7QAGTWVa0Uc/VU-_8tJx3BI/AAAAAAAAFqY/GH9zpfrTMC4/s400/IMG_0585.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I poured half of the water out of the bottle into a glass and then started posting the bits of fruit I had prepared into the bottle.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3NxRXMiO_rU/VU_AWt7W4-I/AAAAAAAAFqg/Fd4LA7ZOLOM/s1600/IMG_0586.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3NxRXMiO_rU/VU_AWt7W4-I/AAAAAAAAFqg/Fd4LA7ZOLOM/s400/IMG_0586.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

This is how it looked when I had finished adding the fruit and topped up the water. This lovely lot went into the fridge overnight to infuse.</div>

This is the beautiful tasting fruit infused water!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

The fruit that did come out when I poured it was a lovely addition to the drink. The remainder that was left in the bottle needed helping out and was lovely with breakfast yoghurt!</div>

So I was very lucky to be invited to a band new blogger event in Sheffield last weekend that my daughter <a href="http://www.teaandblush.com/">Holly-Lucy</a> and her blogger friend <a href="http://www.life-by-lde.co.uk/">Lorna </a> have collaborated on to bring bloggers together through <span style="color: black;"><a href="https://twitter.com/TheCityGirlsUK">#TheCityGirls</a></span></div>

So I thought it about time I shared a post about a very important person in our lives here at Pratt's Patch, Ffion our dalmatian/springer cross dog.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She brings a lot of joy and laughter to our family...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZjWlXXynanI/VTKpHr7R8cI/AAAAAAAAFmo/Rid9Tb57_zM/s1600/IMG_3331.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZjWlXXynanI/VTKpHr7R8cI/AAAAAAAAFmo/Rid9Tb57_zM/s640/IMG_3331.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<br />
She loves the sea and is a springy little dog!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5Sha5k_KclM/VTOADQ_TByI/AAAAAAAAFm8/54qONgqzuvk/s1600/IMG_2969.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5Sha5k_KclM/VTOADQ_TByI/AAAAAAAAFm8/54qONgqzuvk/s640/IMG_2969.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
She particularly loves climbing, and posing for photos....<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pLompyQiFWs/VTOAbvomJCI/AAAAAAAAFnE/hf1C7GYFudg/s1600/DSCF0656.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pLompyQiFWs/VTOAbvomJCI/AAAAAAAAFnE/hf1C7GYFudg/s640/DSCF0656.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
which makes her a great subject for practising with a new camera as I was here!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QG85VLpGPpg/VTOBD3-rGDI/AAAAAAAAFnM/mzcMFQqOziY/s1600/IMG_2946.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QG85VLpGPpg/VTOBD3-rGDI/AAAAAAAAFnM/mzcMFQqOziY/s640/IMG_2946.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This one was taken by our son Lewis, who is a keen photographer and the brains behind a great new <a href="http://retropacks.com/index.php">photography subscription service</a><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OGyT2FP5lPY/VTOEY_jMt6I/AAAAAAAAFnY/g_Oa2e4NqGo/s1600/IMG_2960.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OGyT2FP5lPY/VTOEY_jMt6I/AAAAAAAAFnY/g_Oa2e4NqGo/s640/IMG_2960.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
She also thinks we have purchased a leather settee just for her!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TgDxeWRklJ0/VTOEx-HcfYI/AAAAAAAAFng/Xy4nVZ-jw_k/s1600/IMG_0407.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TgDxeWRklJ0/VTOEx-HcfYI/AAAAAAAAFng/Xy4nVZ-jw_k/s1600/IMG_0407.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
These guys are two of her best friends and they definitely rule the roost!<br />
<br />

We all love bakewell tart here at Prattspatch so when I saw Gordon Ramsey's recipe I just had to make it. This is taken from his book <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooking-Friends-Food-My-Table/dp/0007267037">Cooking for Friends </a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This makes a very moist, yummy and gotta have more tart! Best made when there are lots of visitors!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Of course the faithful Kenwood chef makes making it so much easier and more fun! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First up is the sweet flan pastry case which is lovely and easily made in the chef.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q7iDyYnL3Q4/VSricMVN4DI/AAAAAAAAFk8/LUkDyU3676k/s1600/IMG_0468.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q7iDyYnL3Q4/VSricMVN4DI/AAAAAAAAFk8/LUkDyU3676k/s1600/IMG_0468.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Getting ready to bake blind.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NFljP84GGfA/VSricaSNQ-I/AAAAAAAAFlA/SJqU3-2i00k/s1600/IMG_0472.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NFljP84GGfA/VSricaSNQ-I/AAAAAAAAFlA/SJqU3-2i00k/s1600/IMG_0472.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Useful baking beans </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then is the lovely almond topping which always makes more than the flan can hold so I tend to freeze the left over to make small pies with at a later date. It does freeze well.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It always turns out to be a very rustic but professional look! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3qtcthb3waI/VSrioB463OI/AAAAAAAAFlQ/hv5sEb7p5d4/s1600/FullSizeRender%2B(1).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="618" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3qtcthb3waI/VSrioB463OI/AAAAAAAAFlQ/hv5sEb7p5d4/s640/FullSizeRender%2B(1).jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Very tasty served up with homemade vanilla ice cream!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e0VmbMNz24M/VSrivbtDsDI/AAAAAAAAFlc/f2IBuqAqgd4/s1600/FullSizeRender%2B(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e0VmbMNz24M/VSrivbtDsDI/AAAAAAAAFlc/f2IBuqAqgd4/s640/FullSizeRender%2B(2).jpg" width="488" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Little individual bakewell tarts. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I use homemade strawberry or raspberry jam to spread over the pastry case before adding the lovely layer of almond topping. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

So I was very lucky to be able to buy a new <a href="http://www.kenwoodworld.com/uk">Kenwood</a> Chef recently. I decided to go for <a href="http://www.johnlewis.com/electricals/kenwood/c600003100?rdr=1">John Lewis </a>as the price was good, delivery excellent and after service with a good reputation.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V4R8wmPhWZI/VSgisESieaI/AAAAAAAAFj8/ThzfLf4NfQc/s1600/IMG_0272.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V4R8wmPhWZI/VSgisESieaI/AAAAAAAAFj8/ThzfLf4NfQc/s1600/IMG_0272.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A massive box with all the accessories arrived: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Food processor with 6 cutting discs and a chopping blade- this has revolutionised my pastry making and coleslaw preparation!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
K beater for cakes, pasta and general beating</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Stainless steel whisk for whisking from 1 lone egg to 12! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The creaming beater is great for cake making</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The ThermoResist glass blender- makes easy work of soup blending as well as smoothie making.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The dough hook for great bread making</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was so exciting to unpack each item and find out where it went and what it did! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Instructions with each accessory helps the novice through the learning curve!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Kenwood also include a quick start cook book with some great starter recipes. I decided to try the red velvet cake included in the book as I have always wanted to give it a go.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
So I used a <a href="http://www.sasademarle.com/flexipan-fluted-savarin-en.html">fluted savarin mo</a>ld. I then piled lovely raspberries in the centre and added a few cute white chocolate stars.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is a delicious, moist cake that is a great change from Victoria sponge or carrot cake.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I changed the recipe slightly from the one in the book.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For the cake:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
120g butter</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
300g butter</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2 eggs</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1 tsp vanilla extract</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1 tsp baking powder</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1 tbspn cocoa powder</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
240ml of butter milk</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Red food colouring (I used a small quantity of a red food colour paste)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For the icing:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
600g of icing sugar</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
100g of butter</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
250g cream cheese </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2 tsp vanilla extract</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Method using the Kenwood:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. Put butter and sugar into the bowl and using the creaming beater mix on medium speed until pale and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla extract and mix on medium speed until combined.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. Remove creaming beater and attach K beater, add flour, baking powder and cocoa a bit at a time, mixing on a slow speed between each addition until fluffy and well combined (it is handy to use the splash guard here to prevent dry ingredients from flying everywhere!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. Measure out butter milk into a jug and mix with the right amount of red colouring to give you your desired shade. Add this mix to the cake mixture in the bowl a little at a time on medium speed until you have a smooth deep red mixture.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. Pour your mixture into your fluted savarin mold or into 2 cake tins and bake for 30 minutes or until a knife inserted into the sponge comes out clean. Remove from the oven at this point and leave to cool. Turn onto a cooling rack to completely cool when you are able to safely handle the cake tin.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Icing</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. Add butter, cream cheese and vanilla extract to the bowl and using the creaming beater, beat until smooth and well combined. Gradually add the icing sugar (again the splash guard may be useful here), mix until you have a creamy icing. Scrape the mixture into a smaller bowl, cover and place in the fridge for 30 mins.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. Cut the cake through the middle lengthwise and spread the bottom half with some of the creamy icing. Place the top half back on to the creamy covered base and then cover the top with the rest of the mixture. If you are using 2 cake tin method there is no need to cut the cake in half, just spread the top of one cake with the icing and place the other cake on top and smother the icing over the top of this. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Rough icing is best with this cake so go for it and rough it up!! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Finally pile fresh fruit in the centre or on top and serve and enjoy!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Have you made red velvet cake? Is your recipe the same?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Do you have a Kenwood or other kitchen machine?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy Cooking!</div>

So, having spent the Easter holidays with my very talented daughter I am back to my blogging! Thank you Holly at <a href="http://www.teaandblush.com/">Tea and Blush </a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have had a bag of very large marshmallows in my cupboard for a while now and </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
wondered what I could do with them other than the obvious toasting and just scoffing!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I did a bit of searching and came across this lovely blog <a href="http://www.52kitchenadventures.com/">52 Kitchen Adventures</a> and converted the Homemade Marshmallow Ice Cream recipe.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MaYILpjt-1Q/VSKZqmi_tTI/AAAAAAAAFjA/XKofb6iTksY/s1600/IMG_0372.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MaYILpjt-1Q/VSKZqmi_tTI/AAAAAAAAFjA/XKofb6iTksY/s1600/IMG_0372.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
475ml Milk</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
475ml double cream</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1 10oz bag of large marshmallows</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. Place the milk in a large saucepan and add the marshmallows. Warm over a medium heat whilst stirring until the marshmallows have melted.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. Remove from the heat and cool.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. Whip the cream until it forms soft peaks and fold into the cooled marshmallow and milk mixture.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. Stir in the vanilla extract.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. Place in your ice cream maker and churn until ready.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
6. Put your ice cream into a freezer safe container and freeze until firm.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
7. Serve on its own for a delicate marshmallow flavour.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IN-lKQGqsO4/VSKbNjFwakI/AAAAAAAAFjM/nT-2SS3MLok/s1600/IMG_0431.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IN-lKQGqsO4/VSKbNjFwakI/AAAAAAAAFjM/nT-2SS3MLok/s1600/IMG_0431.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Or serve with mini marshmallows for a total experience!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_Tb2lp6WRLw/VSKbfKJMBEI/AAAAAAAAFjU/weGSUidrSdI/s1600/IMG_0375.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_Tb2lp6WRLw/VSKbfKJMBEI/AAAAAAAAFjU/weGSUidrSdI/s1600/IMG_0375.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<br />
I would like to try toasted marshmallow ice cream next as this may have a stronger flavour.<br />
<br />
Have you made Marshmallow ice cream? What is your favourite recipe?<br />
<br />
Happy creating!<br />

Sock knitting is a passion and obsession of mine although not necessarily a skill I have mastered yet! My most recent project is using the lovely colourful yarn from <a href="http://www.devonsunyarns.co.uk/">Devon Sun Yarns </a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wrifk7TT2NU/VSFlPkjLF7I/AAAAAAAAFic/dnyFWnUqKHs/s1600/IMG_0422.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wrifk7TT2NU/VSFlPkjLF7I/AAAAAAAAFic/dnyFWnUqKHs/s640/IMG_0422.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So today was lovely and sunny and I took the opportunity to sit outside and knit another few rows of these lovely simple socks. I would love a yarn bowl but still not got one so I have enlisted the service of a little bowl I had in the cupboard which is rather sweet too! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The sock project bag was purchased from a lovely shop on Folksy called <a href="https://folksy.com/shops/TangledKnots">Tangled Knots</a> and is so perfect for my sock projects! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The simple sock knitting pattern is taken from <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Purls-Wisdom-The-Book-Knitting/dp/1846143020">Purls Of Wisdom </a> by Jenny Lord, which has lots of great knitting advice and patterns for the beginner and more experienced knitter alike. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used the basic boys sock pattern and amended as suggested for ladies socks.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will post the finished articles when I finish!</div>

</div><div style="text-align: center;">Long time no blog! After having my daughter helping out do some maintenance on here I thought it only right to do a post about some of the delicious icecream I've been making recently using my <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cuisinart-ICE30-ice-cream-maker/dp/B001D650FA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428244703&sr=8-1&keywords=cuisinart+ice-cream+maker">Cuisinart Ice cream</a> maker. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">My love of liquorice and blackcurrant inspired me to make this- I've been wanting to make it for ages!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">When investing in an ice cream machine it leads to alchemy in the kitchen when trying to create your own delicious sweet treats. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">So.. for this recipe the two main ingredients:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"> I needed to find something to give the authentic liquorice taste- a website called <a href="http://www.allthingsliquorice.co.uk/">Allthingsliquorice.co.uk </a>sounded like just the place to look!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRN4pFGDY9GJ3EkjkEOuy8NlqUwDTpbrnb39TGHrxBpYcmoB6FJrDfJ6nvHWLd5tH9ZKi35VvHdT8bYxgmIM2AQr0dHW9if1-thy8b5taDEaimz2em0wE5jTJ-GamnNW6v87tQY7TUtt8f/s1600/IMG_0437.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRN4pFGDY9GJ3EkjkEOuy8NlqUwDTpbrnb39TGHrxBpYcmoB6FJrDfJ6nvHWLd5tH9ZKi35VvHdT8bYxgmIM2AQr0dHW9if1-thy8b5taDEaimz2em0wE5jTJ-GamnNW6v87tQY7TUtt8f/s1600/IMG_0437.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.allthingsliquorice.co.uk/products/danish/lakrids-raw-liquorice-powder-50g.html">Lakrids Liquorice powder</a>- raw liquorice powder steamed,pressed and granulated Persian liquorice roots (£5.99 for 50g)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.allthingsliquorice.co.uk/by/liquorice-by-brand/of/lakrids/content/products/danish/lakrids-sweet-liquorice-syrup.html">Lakrids sweet liquorice syrup</a> £6.99 for 300g)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Then a whole load of home-grown blackcurrants- I've had mine in the freezer for a while.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IlCedKdJTxM/VSFNPjfsrGI/AAAAAAAAFh0/Gm2cWiyv0b8/s1600/IMG_0392.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IlCedKdJTxM/VSFNPjfsrGI/AAAAAAAAFh0/Gm2cWiyv0b8/s1600/IMG_0392.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><u><b>Recipe </b></u></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">375ml double cream</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">125ml milk</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">5 egg yolks</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">200g caster sugar</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">2 teaspoons of raw liquorice powder</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">200g blackcurrants</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">1 heaped teaspoon sweet liquorice syrup</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This is a custard based recipe so you will need time to prepare and cool before churning.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">1-Put your blackcurrants in a pan with a cup of water- simmer gently for 12-15 mins until they are soft and mushy. Remove from heat and put to one side.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">2- In a seperate saucepan combine cream, milk and liquorice powder. Heat and bring almost to the boil sturring occasionally until most of liquorice has melted and the liquid is a nice brown colour. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">3. In another bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar and then add the hot cream mixtutre to the bowl sturing as you go. Return this mixture to the pan to heat further- stir constantly and bring towards boil. As soon as bubbles break the surface of the mixture remove from the heat. Put this custard mix to one side. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">4. Take your blackcurrant mixture, now slightly cooled and press the mix through a sieve collecting the lovely juice and pulp in a bowl. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">5. Once you've collected all the blackcurrant juices and pulp add this to your cooled custard mix- cover with clingfilm and put in the fridge overmight to chill.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">In the morning all you need to do is pop the mixture in your icecream machine to churn for approx 30 mins. Once finished put into a freezer suitable dish, stir through a large teaspoon of the sweet liquorice syrup (in a marbling like effect) and then freeze.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wBZZ__GTLg8/VSFTI2ChsyI/AAAAAAAAFiE/ViAKzJXSUX4/s1600/IMG_0412.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wBZZ__GTLg8/VSFTI2ChsyI/AAAAAAAAFiE/ViAKzJXSUX4/s1600/IMG_0412.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Serve up in your fav icecream bowls and enjoy!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

These are items that have been saved from the tip (or similar!) and are awaiting new lives. After reading <a href="http://www.blogger.com/"><span id="goog_520251934"></span>The Occasional Pat <span id="goog_520251935"></span></a>blog I have decided to have a go with Annie Sloan chalky paint on a couple of these itemsSophiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08219728217848273133noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3073283945550259136.post-53384273438434202732013-08-11T21:21:00.001+01:002015-04-05T18:28:54.298+01:00Chalk Paint makeover.Well I did it, I went for the dark wax and love it!! I have tried many times with the Annie Sloan dark wax and lost courage as it just seems such a contrast. But this time after watching a youtube tutorial I just did it! This is the little shelf in the previous post all done up. It is now in its new home, the little summer house in the woods.<br />
<br />
So Scandinavian pink Annie Sloan, two coats; clear wax, one coat, dark wax, one coat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iJe7JlxS234/UgfvmkQ8XRI/AAAAAAAADz4/fkPIhektiis/s1600/IMG_2807.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iJe7JlxS234/UgfvmkQ8XRI/AAAAAAAADz4/fkPIhektiis/s320/IMG_2807.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />

It was very drab and dreary having been in storage for ages. I used a garden stain/protector to give it a face lift.<br />

<br />
We found this nice little shelving unit to go in my little tiny summer house and immediately<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0yY7fZSkGB4/UgLBpcbeUyI/AAAAAAAADzY/qExmEUJhGJg/s1600/IMG_2788.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0yY7fZSkGB4/UgLBpcbeUyI/AAAAAAAADzY/qExmEUJhGJg/s320/IMG_2788.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IR9614FjYXk/UgLBouVUlUI/AAAAAAAADzQ/wwWPXzFkKYM/s1600/IMG_2789.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IR9614FjYXk/UgLBouVUlUI/AAAAAAAADzQ/wwWPXzFkKYM/s320/IMG_2789.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>I saw it in Scandinavian pink with dark wax finish!! I just love the pink but haven't dared to use it on an item yet (only inside a cupboard). The dark waxing also freaks me a bit but having watched a video on the Annie Sloan website <a href="http://www.anniesloan.com/index.html">anniesloan.com</a> I will go for it!!<br />
<br />
Finished results will follow later. Have you used Annie Sloan chalk paints before? What about dark waxing? Sophiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08219728217848273133noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3073283945550259136.post-66651590942870217282013-08-02T22:21:00.000+01:002015-04-05T18:29:26.427+01:00Colette sewing pattern helping me to make my first dress!!So a lady in our little village suggested that it would be nice to get together for a sewing group utilising the knowledge and skills of experienced sewers to teach those of us who are novice and learners. What a lovely idea and the first 2 meetings have attracted 7+ ladies which is great. It really is the best way to learn these skills, tips, hints and ideas just flow during the evening and the 2 hours rush by! There is a wide age range which is great and sharing is the name of the game! <br />
<br />
I decided to give a dress a go as I knew there would be lots of help available. So I searched the web for a beginners pattern and finally chose this Colette Crepe dress which states it is for beginners. Next I needed to find fabric- I found a lovely linen vintage look fabric at Cloth Spot - <a href="http://clothspot.co.uk/">clothspot</a><br />
<br />
Not only is the fabric lovely at Cloth Spot I also love their site which really displays the fabric to its potential and they help mix and match as well as giving lovely descriptions.<br />

I have never used a paper pattern before. So far I am all cut out and have started sewing!! Will post photos of progress as time passes!!Sophiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08219728217848273133noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3073283945550259136.post-90135850837685015492013-07-28T20:43:00.001+01:002015-04-05T18:29:39.452+01:00Fabric decoupageWell I have had some lovely fabric for ages now and never really felt I could make use of it, until that is I found a lovely little unit at a car boot sale a couple of weeks ago.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RYBiPrDlunk/UfVw-vdNNEI/AAAAAAAADyQ/RrrtuePPW-Q/s1600/IMG_2752.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RYBiPrDlunk/UfVw-vdNNEI/AAAAAAAADyQ/RrrtuePPW-Q/s320/IMG_2752.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6vQHCo8sz1w/UfVxN3WOK9I/AAAAAAAADyg/A8tA9SWMP_0/s1600/IMG_2753.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6vQHCo8sz1w/UfVxN3WOK9I/AAAAAAAADyg/A8tA9SWMP_0/s320/IMG_2753.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>I cut the fabric to size, and started with the lid, covered it with good old Modpoge then applied the fabric smoothly making sure all crinkles and bubbles were smoothed. A good tip found on the web- not to pull or stretch the fabric as you apply it. I then did the same with the body of the box, cutting out around the small silver button. I then applied Modpoge to the whole lot making sure I covered it all. I have then varnished with a water soluble varnish 4 or 5 times. This blog was a great inspiration for fabric decoupage http://www.parlourhomeblog.com/2010/08/decoupaging-my-table.html.<br />
<br />
I so love this little box now and it will look lovely in our bathroom to hold bits and bobs. The fabric came from Fancymoon: http://www.fancymoon.co.uk/ Circus cotton.Sophiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08219728217848273133noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3073283945550259136.post-25664200953337729852013-07-28T20:14:00.001+01:002015-04-05T18:29:57.481+01:00Finished and ready to eat Popcorn ice cream!So I left the custard overnight in the fridge to completely cool. Well I have been away from my blog for a good while now, not forgotten but just so many things to do! I found a recipe for popcorn ice cream after seeing an advert on the TV for some and just had to share this. I haven't yet finished making the ice cream but already it tastes amazing!<br />
<br />
I found the recipe on the BBC Good Food website and will include it here. I was so lucky to get an ice cream maker for Christmas and have really enjoyed making all sorts of lovely flavours of ice cream. I have become more adventurous as my successes continue too!<br />
<br />
So this popcorn ice cream is easy to make using a custard base. First though the corn needs popping! As you would normally do for lovely popcorn, pop it in a pan with oil to pop. Next, pour your whole milk and double cream and a pinch of salt into a pan, add the popped corn and bring to the boil. Turn off the heat and infuse for 1 hour.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gCnOLQhtBvM/UfQUroP0v0I/AAAAAAAADwA/FTRyscqQWLo/s1600/IMG_2778.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gCnOLQhtBvM/UfQUroP0v0I/AAAAAAAADwA/FTRyscqQWLo/s320/IMG_2778.jpg" width="240" /></a></div> Next strain the milk/cream mix through a sieve, pressing the corn to extract all the liquid and taste. Throw the soggy popcorn away. Now beat your egg yolks with the sugar until pale. Heat the infused milk/cream mixture with a pinch of sea salt, allow it to boil and then pour onto the egg and sugar mixture, stirring all the time. Return the mixture to the pan and stir over a low heat for 10 mins until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon. Cover and cool.<br />
<br />
<br />

Now you can ripple though some caramel or toffee sauce. Put ice cream into a container and freeze until ready to enjoy with a topping of caramel or toffee sauce.<br />

This tastes amazingly popcorny and so delicious! I like to use a Taffi sauce made locally in Pwllheli by Eboni Ac Eifori - it is so moreish!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yO6DTxpxCME/UfQY39so2iI/AAAAAAAADwg/Tx57NGw1q_Q/s1600/IMG_2780.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yO6DTxpxCME/UfQY39so2iI/AAAAAAAADwg/Tx57NGw1q_Q/s320/IMG_2780.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> To find out more about this lovely sauce go to <a href="http://www.eboniaceifori.co.uk/">http://www.eboniaceifori.co.uk/</a><br />
<br />
So ingredients:<br />
<br />
1tbsp flavourless oil<br />
100g raw popcorn kernels<br />
350ml double cream<br />
500ml whole milk<br />
4 egg yolks<br />
100g golden caster sugar<br />
<br />
<br />
Our veggie patch has been amazing this year and really given us great pleasure and full tummies! A couple of weekends ago I made a simple pavlova with strawberries and raspberries from our patch. It was absolutely delicious- so much so I had to share with our neighbours to stop us eating the whole lot!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TQba4oYLMoI/UfQa349ecgI/AAAAAAAADww/gkvzfGfrbcQ/s1600/IMG_2743.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TQba4oYLMoI/UfQa349ecgI/AAAAAAAADww/gkvzfGfrbcQ/s320/IMG_2743.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
We have had lots of lovely lettuce, courgettes and rocket too. Oh and so sweet peas I do love podding and popping into my mouth!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XkhPBFuQFgY/UfQba1kZBMI/AAAAAAAADw4/cdlYPV7r-CE/s1600/IMG_2777.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XkhPBFuQFgY/UfQba1kZBMI/AAAAAAAADw4/cdlYPV7r-CE/s320/IMG_2777.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XL-wQbIs2rI/UfQb11rVBYI/AAAAAAAADxA/LxhCwJtzFrg/s1600/IMG_2706.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XL-wQbIs2rI/UfQb11rVBYI/AAAAAAAADxA/LxhCwJtzFrg/s320/IMG_2706.jpg" width="240" /></a></div> The best year yet for strawberries for us here in North Wales! They have just finished providing us with sweet large fruit and today I potted the new runners so hopefully we will have even more next year! I didn't realise how easy it was to propagate strawberries - just pop the small new plant growing on the runner into some soil in a little pot. Once it has taken it can then be cut away from the mother plant and hey presto a new plant!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0ShLum2oU-U/UfQcFahg0RI/AAAAAAAADxI/i2-CQMxYsIQ/s1600/IMG_2707.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0ShLum2oU-U/UfQcFahg0RI/AAAAAAAADxI/i2-CQMxYsIQ/s320/IMG_2707.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vhks4E44C6k/UfQcTGEZN-I/AAAAAAAADxQ/fYfZUcwNnPo/s1600/IMG_2756.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vhks4E44C6k/UfQcTGEZN-I/AAAAAAAADxQ/fYfZUcwNnPo/s320/IMG_2756.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
The Patch in all it's glory! Broad beans are beginning to harvest now and having lots of lovely yellow French beans too. Sadly all our gooseberry plants have died- not sure why, but really sad sight. Not sure I want to replace them so may plant the spot with some else later on.<br />
<br />
So other things I have been up to:<br />
<br />
Fabric decoupage- post to come later with a mini tutorial if anyone is interested!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">We have also extended the plot to include a trough on the outer edge where we will plant carrots. We are going with the plant as much as you can - do not follow spacing rules just go for it!! Also co-planting, that is if there is a space put something in it!<br />
Gary is also constructing the defence cages, so will post pics of these when finished. Our poor gooseberries are always attacked by caterpillars a bit later in the year making them look so awful so we intent trying to protect them this year. Mice have competed with me to eat our strawberries so will see if our defence strategy works this year.<br />
<br />
We are planning on planting courgette again this year, potatoes in sacks, mange tout, dwarf beans , salad, parsnip and anything else we can fit in!<br />
